A strategy game based on one of science fiction’s most famous series sounds like a big deal, and also like something that could go either way. Foundation: Galactic Frontier launched in October 2025. Here’s what kind of game it actually is, so you can decide whether it’s for you.
The short version
Foundation: Galactic Frontier is a free-to-play sci-fi strategy game developed and published by FunPlus. It launched globally on iOS, Android and PC on October 21, 2025. It’s an adaptation of Isaac Asimov’s Foundation universe, made in collaboration with Paramount Television Studios, which holds the rights.
What you actually do
Play a trader in a declining galaxy. Instead of a heroic emperor, you’re a trader, bounty hunter or political operator moving between the Empire, the Foundation, rival factions and rebels, with Seldon’s Plan and the Mule in the background, which fits the themes of the Foundation novels.
Build a crew. You assemble a varied crew, from robots to bounty hunters and outlaws, each adding something different.
Customize your flagship. Your ship works as your mobile home base: you build cabins for food, water recycling and steel, then arm it. Upgrading it is a core part of progression.
Fight on the ground. Planet missions use third-person shooter combat with a three-hero squad, built around tank, damage and healer roles from a roster of more than 15 heroes.
Fight large real-time space battles. Fleets mix three craft classes (Kinetic, Ion and Beam) under the commanders you assign, and protecting trade routes, alliances and planetary control form the long-term strategy layer.
Make faction choices. The game leans on choices between cooperation and self-interest, a nod to the political tone of the source material.
How close is it to Foundation?
If you know the books or the TV series, expect the setting, themes and tone, such as a crumbling empire, politics and the long arc of history, rather than a direct retelling of the novels’ plot. It’s a strategy game set in that universe, not an adventure that follows the characters chapter by chapter.
On PC: the launcher, not Steam (yet)
The PC version that launched in October 2025 runs through FunPlus’s own client. The game has a Steam page, but at the time of writing it’s listed as coming soon, so don’t wait for a Steam release if you want to play now.
What to expect as a free-to-play strategy game
Like most games in this genre, progress depends on regular play, and there are paid packs and speed-ups. Alliances and timed events matter. Look at the shop yourself before spending, and set a budget if you plan to.
Who should try it
- You love space sci-fi and strategy with a long-term progression arc.
- You’re a Foundation fan curious to explore the setting in game form.
- You enjoy alliances and large-scale battles.
- You want to play on PC and phone with one account.
Who should skip it
- You want a story-driven single-player Foundation experience.
- You dislike free-to-play strategy routines like timers and daily check-ins.
- You prefer action over planning. For a historical strategy alternative, see is Rise of Kingdoms worth playing.
Bottom line: Foundation: Galactic Frontier is worth a look if a free sci-fi strategy game in Asimov’s universe sounds appealing and you enjoy the alliance-and-progression rhythm of the genre. It costs nothing to install, so the first few sessions will tell you whether its setting and space battles hold your interest.
