Genshin Impact hands you an open world, a growing cast of playable characters and several progression systems in the first few hours, without explaining how they connect. Most of the early confusion isn’t about difficulty. It’s about not knowing which numbers on screen actually control your progress. (Still deciding whether to start at all? See is Genshin Impact still worth starting in 2026.)
Adventure Rank is the account-level system that matters most
Character level is what most new players focus on, but Adventure Rank (AR) is the account-wide progression stat that actually gates content. Raising it, through quests, chests, the Adventurer Handbook and even spending Original Resin, unlocks new story quests, higher-level domains, and better rewards.
Adventure Rank also drives your World Level, which increases automatically or through an ascension quest at set AR thresholds. World Level raises enemy difficulty alongside reward quality. From World Level 3 you can lower it by one level (once per 24 hours), but that lowers rewards too, so it’s a temporary relief valve rather than a way to avoid the scaling.
Resin gates your best rewards — don’t waste it early
Original Resin is the resource that limits how much high-value farming (bosses, artifact domains, weekly bosses) you can do per day. It regenerates on its own at 1 point every 8 minutes, up to a cap of 200, and a consumable called Fragile Resin can refill it early. Resin sitting at the cap is wasted regeneration, so spend it before it fills.
The practical early-game mistake is spending Fragile Resin the moment you get one. The loot pool tied to Resin-gated content improves as your Adventure Rank rises, so using a refill at AR 15 gets you a worse drop table than using the same refill later. If you’re not sure whether to use one, the safer default while leveling is: don’t, and let Resin regenerate naturally until your account is far enough along that the drops are actually worth it.
Don’t overthink your first team
New players often stall on “which characters are correct” before they’ve played enough to know what they enjoy. Early on, almost any team clears content if you understand each character’s basic role (damage, support, healing, shield) and use their skills instead of only auto-attacking. Team optimization matters far more once you’re pushing higher-difficulty content later, like the Spiral Abyss. It’s not a first-week problem.
Exploration is not a distraction from progression
Because Adventure EXP comes from quests, chests and map exploration, not just combat, wandering off the main path is not wasted time. Opening map areas, solving overworld puzzles, and collecting chests raises your Adventure Rank at a steady pace, often faster than grinding the same content repeatedly.
A practical first-session priority order
- Play through the early main story quests, since they gate major systems and areas.
- Explore naturally as you travel between objectives instead of using fast travel exclusively.
- Work through the Adventurer Handbook’s Experience tasks and your Daily Commissions, both easy sources of Adventure EXP.
- Spend your naturally regenerating Resin, but leave Fragile Resin unused until your Adventure Rank is well past the early game.
- Build a team around clear roles, not a “best” character list. Our team-building guide covers exactly how once you’re ready for that.
Genshin Impact rewards patience with its own systems more than it rewards rushing them. Understanding what Adventure Rank, World Level and Resin actually do removes most of the early confusion. The rest is just playing the game.
