Genshin Impact launched in September 2020. Starting a long-running live-service game years after release raises a fair question: are you arriving at the best time, with the most content ever available, or too late to catch up? The honest answer depends less on the game and more on what kind of player you are.

What you’re actually signing up for

Genshin Impact is HoYoverse’s free-to-play open-world action RPG. You explore the world of Teyvat, switch between a party of characters with different elements in real time, and progress an account-wide Adventure Rank that unlocks story chapters, raises world difficulty and improves rewards. It runs on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, iOS and Android, with cross-platform play and progression. (The PlayStation 4 version stopped receiving updates in April 2026.)

Three things define the day-to-day experience:

  • Exploration and story are the main draw, and the amount of both available today is far larger than at launch.
  • Combat is built on elemental reactions between characters, which gets deeper the more characters you have. Our team-building guide explains it.
  • Characters come from a gacha system called Wishes. Gacha means randomized draws, paid for with currency you earn in play or can buy. The rates and guarantees are published in the game itself.

Why starting now is a good time

There is a huge backlog of content. A new player gets years of regions, story quests and events-turned-permanent content to work through at their own pace. Nothing about the main story requires you to have been there in 2020.

Early progression is generous. The early game hands out a lot of rewards from exploration, chests and first-time quest completions, so you can build a working team without spending.

You don’t need the “best” characters. Almost any team clears normal content if you understand roles: damage, support, healer, shield. Our beginner guide explains what actually matters in the first weeks.

Why it can feel demanding

Daily resource limits. Original Resin limits how much high-value farming you can do each day. Progress is steady, not bingeable once you’re past the early game.

Gear grinding. Artifacts, Genshin’s gear system, have random stats and can take a long time to farm well. Our artifact farming priority guide helps you avoid wasting resin on the wrong things.

Gacha pressure. New characters arrive regularly on limited banners. The game is fully playable without spending, but if you’re the kind of player who feels you must own every new character, a gacha game will cost you money or frustration. Be honest with yourself about that before you start.

Endgame is optional but stat-heavy. The Spiral Abyss rewards well-built teams. You don’t need it to enjoy the game, but it’s where the grind matters most.

Who should start

  • You like open-world exploration and story and you’re happy to progress at a steady pace.
  • You can treat the gacha as optional and enjoy the characters you get.
  • You want a game you can play on PC, console and phone with one account.

Who should skip it

  • You want to finish a game in a few weeks, not keep playing for months.
  • You dislike daily routines or limited-time events.
  • Randomized purchases are something you know you struggle with. That’s a good reason to choose a game without a gacha system.

Before you install on PC

Genshin Impact runs on a wide range of hardware, but a stable frame rate makes combat and exploration feel far better than higher detail. Start with our Genshin Impact PC settings guide.

Bottom line: in 2026, Genshin Impact is one of the most content-rich free games you can start, provided you go in for exploration and story, set your own spending rules on day one, and accept a steady daily pace.
