“It’s like Genshin” is the first thing many people hear about Neverness to Everness. It’s a fair starting point: both are free-to-play open-world action RPGs where you collect characters through a gacha system and switch between them in combat. But the comparison stops being useful quickly, because the two games are built around very different worlds and very different ways of spending your time.

World and tone

This is the biggest difference, and the easiest way to choose.

Genshin Impact is classic fantasy: nations, ancient gods, ruins, wide natural landscapes. Exploration means climbing and gliding across mountains, forests and coastlines.

Neverness to Everness is set in a modern city. Hethereau has streets, traffic and neighborhoods, and supernatural Anomalies live alongside everyday life. Our explainer on what NTE actually is covers the setting in more detail. If you’ve ever wanted a gacha action RPG with an urban feel instead of fantasy, this is the main reason to pick NTE.

How you spend a session

Genshin sessions revolve around exploration, story quests, daily commissions and farming resources for characters and gear.

NTE adds a life-sim layer. Jobs and property give you things to do between fights and missions, and driving is part of moving around the city. Our guide to NTE’s life-sim systems explains why these systems matter rather than being decoration.

Combat

Both have you switch between characters in real time, so the basic idea will feel familiar if you’ve played either one.

Genshin’s depth comes mostly from elemental reactions: combining characters’ elements to trigger stronger effects. Our Genshin team-building guide covers it.

NTE’s depth comes from its own switching and Esper system, explained in our NTE combat guide. Don’t expect Genshin’s reaction logic to carry over directly. Learn it on its own terms.

Content volume: new game vs long-running game

Genshin Impact has years of content to explore. NTE launched in April 2026, so it has much less, but you’re arriving close to the start. That changes the feel:

  • In Genshin, you’ll never run out of things to do, but you’re joining a game with years of characters and systems already in place.
  • In NTE, the world is smaller for now, but you’re learning the game along with most of the community, and every new update is new for everyone.

Platforms

If you play on Xbox, Genshin Impact is the only one of the two available to you. If you play on Mac, NTE lists a Mac version. On PC, PlayStation 5 and mobile, both are options.

Which one should you start?

  1. You want fantasy exploration and a huge amount of content right now: Genshin Impact. Start with our Genshin beginner guide.
  2. You want a modern urban setting, driving and life-sim systems: Neverness to Everness.
  3. You’re on Xbox: Genshin Impact. On Mac: NTE.
  4. You want to be early to a new game: NTE.

Whichever you choose, both use a gacha system for characters. Decide your own spending rules before you start, and check the published rates in the game. On PC, a stable frame rate matters more than maximum detail in both; see our NTE PC settings guide and the Genshin Impact PC settings guide.
