Zenless Zone Zero (ZZZ) comes from HoYoverse, the studio behind Genshin Impact, so many people expect “Genshin, but modern”. That expectation is the most common reason players are surprised by it, in either direction. ZZZ is its own kind of game, and knowing what it is before you install saves a lot of disappointment.

What it is

ZZZ is a free-to-play action game launched in July 2024 on PC, PlayStation 5, iOS and Android, with an Xbox Series X|S version since June 2025 and progress shared across platforms. It’s set in New Eridus, a stylish city built around dangerous rifts called Hollows. You play as a Proxy who guides teams of agents through them.

It is not a big open world. You spend time in a city hub, then jump into missions and combat stages. If what you want is to wander a huge map, that’s an important difference from Genshin Impact or Wuthering Waves.

Why it’s worth trying

Combat feels great to watch and to play. Fights use three-character teams, with fast dodges, quick switches and chain attacks that pass the action between agents. It’s flashy, readable and satisfying even early on.

Style and personality. The city, music and characters have a strong, consistent identity, with an urban, retro-tech look that stands out among gacha games.

Shorter sessions work well. Because content is mission-based, it’s easier to play in short bursts than an open-world game where travel eats time.

It runs on everything you own. PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox and phones, with shared progress.

How combat and progression work

  • Daze, Stun and Chain Attacks. Hits build Daze on an enemy. At 100% the enemy is Stunned: it can’t act and takes extra damage, and a heavy attack on a Stunned enemy starts a Chain Attack that passes the action to your next agent. Normal enemies allow one Chain Attack, elites two and bosses three.
  • Three kinds of gear. Agents equip a W-Engine (their weapon) and Drive Discs (stat gear with set bonuses), and you bring a Bangboo, a small companion with its own skills.
  • Battery Charge. Upgrade-material stages cost Battery Charge, which refills by one point every six minutes up to 240, a full day from empty. That’s what limits how fast you can build characters, not how long you can play.
  • Signal Search channels. The gacha has separate channels. The Exclusive Channel features a limited S-Rank agent and changes twice per version; the W-Engine Channel does the same for signature weapons, and Bangboo have their own channel.

What it asks of you

A gacha mindset. New agents and their signature weapons come from randomized draws. Rates and guarantees are published in the game. Decide your spending rules before you start.

Tolerance for daily routines. Like other HoYoverse games, there are daily tasks and limited resources that gate how fast you can upgrade characters.

Comfort with a city hub instead of exploration. Some players love the compact, character-driven hub. Others miss open-world freedom.

Who should play it

  • You want fast, stylish action combat in short sessions.
  • You like character-driven stories with a strong visual identity.
  • You play on console or mobile and want shared progress.

Who should skip it

  • You want a large open world to explore. Look at Wuthering Waves or Genshin Impact instead.
  • You’d rather avoid randomized purchases altogether.
  • You dislike daily login routines.

On PC

ZZZ is generally lighter than large open-world games, but combat is fast enough that a stable frame rate matters more than maximum detail. Our guide to smooth PC gaming without chasing Ultra settings covers the essentials.

Bottom line: in 2026, Zenless Zone Zero is worth installing if you want slick, fast combat and style in a game you can play in short sessions. If exploration is what you love about gacha games, it’s probably not the one for you.
