Wuthering Waves arrived in May 2024 with a lot of attention and a fair amount of criticism about its launch state. More than two years later, it’s on more platforms than ever: PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Mac, iOS and Android. So is it worth starting now? For a specific kind of player, very much so. Here’s how to tell whether that’s you.
What it is
Wuthering Waves is a free-to-play open-world action RPG from Kuro Games. You play as a Rover exploring a post-apocalyptic world, switch between a team of characters in real time, and collect new characters through a gacha system. That much will sound familiar if you’ve played Genshin Impact. What sets it apart is how combat feels and how builds work.
Why it’s worth trying
Combat is the main draw. Fights are fast and reward timing: dodging, parrying and swapping characters at the right moment to trigger their entry and exit skills. Players who find other open-world gacha games too passive often point to combat as the reason they stay with Wuthering Waves.
Echoes add a real build layer. Defeated enemies can be captured as Echoes, which you equip to boost a character and, in some cases, to use as an active skill. It gives exploration and fighting a purpose beyond the story.
Traversal is quick. Movement options like climbing, gliding and fast running make getting around the open world feel smooth rather than slow.
It’s everywhere now. With PC, PS5, Xbox, Mac and mobile versions, it’s easy to fit into how you already play.
What it asks of you
A gacha mindset. New characters and weapons come from randomized draws, paid for with currency you earn in play or buy. The rates and guarantees are published in the game. If owning every new character matters to you, set a spending limit before you start.
Time for builds. Echoes have random stats, and getting good ones for your main team takes repeated farming. That’s satisfying for some players and a grind for others.
Patience with the early story. The opening hours introduce a lot of terms and factions at once. Many players say the experience improves once the combat and build systems open up.
Who should play it
- You care most about action combat and want a gacha game that rewards skill and timing.
- You enjoy theorycrafting builds and don’t mind farming for the right stats.
- You want something to play across PC, console and mobile.
Who should skip it
- You want a relaxed, story-first open world with low-pressure combat.
- Randomized purchases are something you prefer to avoid entirely.
- You don’t want a game that expects regular play to keep up with events.
If you already play Genshin Impact
The two games overlap in format but differ in feel. Genshin leans on exploration, puzzles and elemental reactions; Wuthering Waves leans on combat timing and Echo builds. If you love Genshin’s world but wish combat asked more of you, Wuthering Waves is worth a look. Our Genshin Impact beginner guide and NTE vs Genshin comparison cover the rest of the genre.
On PC: get a stable frame rate first
Wuthering Waves is demanding in busy fights. A steady frame rate makes dodge and parry timing much easier than higher visual settings do. The principles in our guide to smooth PC gaming without chasing Ultra settings apply directly.
Bottom line: in 2026, Wuthering Waves is one of the strongest free picks if action combat is what you want from an open-world gacha game. Go in with a spending limit, expect some build farming, and give it past the opening hours before you decide.
