This guide is research-based: it describes how each game is built and sold, not scored hands-on reviews.

Extraction shooters all share one rule: you bring gear in, and you only keep what you carry out alive. The genre’s best-known names cost money, but several solid ones are free to download in 2026. They differ a lot in pace, setting and how “free” they really are, so this guide isn’t a ranked list. It sorts them by the kind of player each one suits.

The short version

Game Best for Setting Free, with a catch?
Delta Force Learning the genre with a safety net Modern military Free; cosmetic and battle-pass shop
Arena Breakout: Infinite Slow, realistic, high-tension raids Modern military Free; check the current shop
Dark and Darker Fantasy dungeon crawling Medieval fantasy Free base game, but key features sit behind a paid upgrade
Vigor A more forgiving, survival-flavored pace Post-apocalyptic Norway Free; optional purchases
Off The Grid Fast, sci-fi “extraction royale” Cyberpunk Free; optional blockchain-based item economy

Delta Force: the easiest way in

Delta Force is a free-to-play military shooter from Team Jade, available on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and mobile, with cross-platform play. Its extraction mode, Operations, sits next to Warfare, a large-scale respawn mode with vehicles.

That pairing is why it’s the gentlest entry point to the genre. You can learn maps, guns and recoil in Warfare without losing anything, then move into Operations when you’re ready to risk gear. Its abilities-based Operators also make it more arcade-friendly than the hardcore end of the genre.

Pick it if you’re new to extraction games, you play on console or mobile, or you want variety in one download. Start with our Warfare vs. Operations guide and the Operations survival guide.

Arena Breakout: Infinite: the closest free thing to hardcore

Arena Breakout: Infinite, from Tencent-owned MoreFun Studios, left beta with a full release on Steam and the Epic Games Store in mid-September 2025. It’s PC-only and extraction-only, built around small squads and a slower, more deliberate, realism-focused style.

There’s no respawn mode to learn in, so the first hours are steep. That’s the point for the players it’s made for. At its full release the studio said its Koen currency could no longer be bought with real money, a move it presented as addressing pay-to-win concerns. Shops change with seasons, so check the current store yourself.

Pick it if you want tense, methodical raids on PC and don’t need anything else in the package. Our Delta Force vs Arena Breakout: Infinite comparison goes deeper on the choice between these two.

Dark and Darker: fantasy, with a paywall to understand

Dark and Darker swaps guns for swords and spells. You explore dungeons in first person, fight monsters and other players, and try to escape with your loot. It’s free to download, but read the model carefully: the paid Legendary Status upgrade unlocks a lot of what long-term players care about, including the high-stakes High Roller dungeons and trading features. Its user reviews on Steam have been mixed since the switch to this model.

Pick it if you want extraction tension in a fantasy setting and you’re fine with the free version as a long trial, or with paying for the upgrade once you’re hooked.

Vigor: a slower, survival-flavored option

Vigor comes from Bohemia Interactive, the studio behind DayZ. It started on consoles, and it’s now free-to-play on PC through Steam as well as on Xbox, PlayStation and Nintendo Switch. You head out from your Shelter into post-apocalyptic Norway, scavenge, and get out before a radiation cloud covers the map. Between raids, you upgrade the Shelter.

Pick it if you want an extraction game with a survival-game feel, or you play on Switch, where most of this genre doesn’t exist.

Off The Grid: fast, sci-fi and a little different

Off The Grid, from Gunzilla Games, calls itself an “extraction royale”: a large-lobby cyberpunk shooter with cyber-implant abilities, wall-running and extraction rules. It’s free on PC (Steam and Epic Games Store), PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, and launched in early access, so check its current status before you expect a finished game. It also has an optional blockchain-based item economy. You can play without touching it, but know it’s there.

Pick it if you want a fast, movement-heavy sci-fi take on the genre.

  • ARC Raiders (Embark Studios) launched on October 30, 2025 as a paid game, around $40 for the standard edition, after originally being planned as free-to-play.
  • Escape from Tarkov and Hunt: Showdown 1896 are both paid.
  • Marathon (Bungie) is a paid release.

If you play one of the free games above and love the genre, those are the natural next steps.

What’s no longer an option

  • Hawked (MY.GAMES) was delisted in March 2026; its PC servers shut down on June 9 and its console servers on September 7, 2026.
  • PUBG: Black Budget (Krafton) was cancelled on October 1, 2026, after two closed alpha tests. It never launched.

How to choose

  1. New to extraction games? Start with Delta Force and learn in Warfare first.
  2. Want the hardcore experience without paying? Arena Breakout: Infinite.
  3. Prefer fantasy over guns? Dark and Darker, knowing what the paid upgrade unlocks.
  4. On Switch, or want a survival-game feel? Vigor.
  5. Want fast, sci-fi movement? Off The Grid.

All five are free to download, so the cheapest test is your own: install the one that matches your platform and taste, play a few raids, and keep the one where losing your gear makes you want to queue again.

Before you install on PC

Extraction shooters punish stutter more than most genres: a hitch in a firefight can cost a whole raid’s loot. If your PC is close to the minimum specs, prioritize a stable frame rate over visual detail. Our guide to smooth PC gaming without chasing Ultra settings and the Delta Force PC settings guide apply to all of them.
